I’ve had a particular reference photo in my folder for a while, of Paul McCartney and David Bowie backstage at Live Aid in ‘85. I decided to have a crack at drawing it today, or at least make a start. Swipe for my initial loose pencil marks, and the image in question. On any drawing I’ll begin by studying the reference, and mentally logging the unique elements of a person’s appearance (and, in this case, those aspects that contrast with the person stood next to them). I’ll then begin throwing down very simple lines and shapes to develop the likeness, gradually refining it with darker graphite & pencil as I go along. As always, this is simply a “first pass”, and there are several areas relating to likeness and composition I want to enhance and adjust. It’s been a slow start to the year workwise as I’ve been grappling with a herniated disk. One thing I have been able to maintain is my rehearsal schedule for ‘A Tomb with a View’, the latest @pont_rep production in which I’m playing Penworthy, the scheming family solicitor. The stage design called for a portrait of the late Septimus Tomb - head of the family and legator of the family fortune - to be hanging above the fireplace on set, and I was happy to help out. He isn’t based on anyone in particular, I came up with my own ideas based on the outline in the script: “Above the mantle a thick gold frame holds a terrifying portrait of the late Septimus Tomb, gaunt, wrinkled, almost bald, with the bloodshot pop-eyes of a raving lunatic. The eyes appear to follow whoever is in the room.” 👀 The show opens on Friday March 8th, and there are still tickets available! Head over to @pont_rep where you’ll find a link.

It’s been a slow start to 2024, as I’ve been hit with some fairly horrendous sciatica which has made it impossible for me to sit at the computer or drawing board for any length of time. As a result I’ve had to put most of my studio projects on hold for the last few weeks. As things begin to ease up, I’m keen to revisit a lot of the movie and pop culture paintings I worked on last year and didn’t get around to completing for one reason or another, with the intention being to make a catalogue of prints available both directly and through my Etsy store. For starters here’s a work in progress of the Mallrats ‘stink palm’ scene, which I’ve always enjoyed a great deal. Now the kids have returned to school it’s time to get back in the game. Here’s my first drawing of 2024, inspired by Freddie’s incredible Live Aid performance.
